Dozuki is a California software company. Since 2011, it has built a connected worker platform that manufacturers use to turn expert know-how into work instructions and training for their frontline teams. We took over the mobile side of that platform and built the iOS and Android app that brings Dozuki’s training and certification exams to the factory floor.

The challenge

Dozuki’s customers are manufacturing companies where a skipped step can get someone hurt, so no one starts a job like a lockout/tagout or a line changeover untested.

  • Training stuck at a desk – Dozuki’s courses and exams lived on the web. The people taking them spend their shifts on production lines, in warehouses and out in the field.
  • Exams built around visuals – Dozuki’s exams go well beyond multiple choice. Workers identify parts on photos and put procedure steps in order, and all of it had to work on a small touchscreen.
  • Many customers, many brands – A lot of Dozuki’s customers run the platform under their own name. Their workers expect to see their company’s brand, on mobile too.

The solution

We rebuilt Dozuki’s exam experience as a single mobile app that any customer can make their own.

  • One cross-platform codebase – We built the app in Flutter, so one codebase covers both platforms. Every fix and feature ships everywhere at once.
  • Question types rebuilt for touch – We rebuilt each question type for touchscreens, from marking a spot on a photo to ordering the steps of a procedure. Reading material comes first, so workers study before they’re tested.
  • Branding without extra codebases – We built white-label support into the app itself. Dozuki can give each customer a branded version without maintaining a separate app for each one.
  • An extension of their team – We worked as part of Dozuki’s product organization, with daily calls with their team lead to plan work and settle questions early.

Certification on the shop floor

Dozuki’s platform covers work instructions, training and quality sign-offs for manufacturers, and the mobile app puts its training and certification in every frontline worker’s hands.

Product features

  • Mobile certification exams
  • Visual learning content
  • Image-based questions
  • Process order questions
  • Multiple question versions
  • White-label branding

Mobile certification exams

Workers take their role’s certification exams on a phone or tablet and get their result at the end. No computer or training room needed.

Visual learning content

Each course opens with short text and images that walk through the procedure. It gives workers a quick refresher before the questions start.

Image-based questions

Workers mark the right spot on a photo, like a valve or an emergency stop. It tests whether they’d recognize it on the job.

Process order questions

Workers arrange the steps of a procedure in the right sequence. In something like a lockout/tagout, the order matters as much as the steps themselves.

Multiple question versions

Each question can come in several versions. Retaking an exam means proving the knowledge again, not recalling the last answer key.

White-label branding

Each customer’s workers see their own company’s name and colors in the app. Behind the scenes, everything runs on Dozuki’s platform.

Our impact

Training moved to where the work happens

Workers no longer need a desk to study a procedure or take an exam. The phone or tablet they already carry is enough.

One mobile product to maintain

Dozuki looks after a single app instead of two. New features reach every worker at the same time, whatever device they use.

A mobile app for every branded account

Customers who run Dozuki under their own name could now offer their workers a mobile app too. White-labeling opened the app up to those accounts.

Exams kept their rigor on mobile

Image questions, step ordering and question variants all carry over from the web. A certification earned on a phone means the same as one earned at a desk.

Outcome

Dozuki’s customers have a mobile app for frontline training and certification, built to the same standard as the web platform behind it.

We got there in about a year, with a small Flutter team working directly with Dozuki’s team.

  • Complete course and exam flow – Reading material, images, questions and results all live in one app.
  • Same courses as the web – Workers see the courses and exams their company already runs on Dozuki.
  • Steady delivery for a year – We shipped from start to finish without major blockers.
  • Mobile in trusted hands – Dozuki’s own team could focus on the core platform while we ran mobile.

Dozuki’s training now goes wherever its workers do.
