SaltExchange is a national community of philanthropists working together to confront some of the world’s most urgent challenges. Our goal was to help them improve their platform, where people can easily find organizations that align with their values.

The challenge

Philanthropists wanted to give, but didn’t always know where to start.

That was one of the challenges SaltExchange set out to address. The goal was to make nonprofit discovery simple, educational, and aligned with each donor’s values. Alongside that, tackling databases and huge amounts of data was a problem we aimed to solve.

The solution

Although the client already had a platform, they wanted to improve it with our help. For the prototype, we focused on a single, critical issue: Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC).

We designed an interactive prototype that helps donors explore the CSEC ecosystem, understand where nonprofits fit in, and find the ones aligned with their values. It combines a visual map, searchable database, and organization profiles, all built to support thoughtful giving.

A PLATFORM FOR THOUGHTFUL GIVING

Search and filters only go so far. This platform adds depth by connecting each organization to its place in the ecosystem, helping donors discover groups they wouldn’t have found on their own.

Platform features

  • Ecosystem map
  • Organizations database
  • Organization profiles
  • Map view

Ecosystem map

A subway-style map that visualizes the CSEC landscape. Each line shows a role, each station an activity. It’s built from the child’s perspective to create empathy.

Organizations database

A searchable list of nonprofits focused on CSEC in California. Users can filter by role, focus, or location to find groups that align with their values.

Organization profiles

Each profile shows key info: description, financials, validation, Charity Navigator score, and location, along with links to donate or learn more.

Map view

An interactive map shows where each organization is based. Clicking a pin opens its full profile for easy exploration.

Our impact

Information architecture and UX planning

Once we had a clear understanding of the platform’s purpose, we defined the structure behind it.

User flows, screen hierarchy, and navigation logic were mapped out to make sure the experience aligned with how donors explore causes.

Design system creation

We developed a flexible design system alongside the prototype.

This included reusable components, spacing rules, and typography styles, making the design consistent, scalable, and much easier for developers to implement.

Interactive prototype

The final prototype included all core user journeys, from browsing the ecosystem to exploring nonprofit profiles.

Every screen was fully clickable and built with real content, giving SaltExchange a testable, investor-ready experience.

Data structure consulting

SaltExchange had access to valuable nonprofit data, but much of it needed structure.

We stepped in to assess the data, highlight gaps, and recommend practical approaches for standardizing inputs, either manually or with AI support.

How we got there

We kicked things off with a series of workshops to understand the client’s vision, audience, and existing materials.

As the project took shape, we worked in short feedback loops: designing, adjusting, and documenting in parallel.

We shared progress regularly, worked through complexity together, and adapted quickly when new needs came up.

When the prototype was ready, we packaged everything for a clean handoff, from structured design files to a working design system.

Outcome

Here’s what we achieved in just three months:

  • Prototyped the client’s new platform experience, based on empathy and clarity.
  • Created a flexible design system and developer-ready files.
  • Architected the data to be clean and scalable for further development

We’re looking forward to continuing our work with the client and helping them tackle the world’s most important causes.
